You can claim your UK State Pension abroad, provided that you meet the requirements.
The number of ‘qualifying years’ on your National Insurance (NI) record will determine if you are eligible for the UK State Pension and how much you will receive.
Currently, you need a minimum of 10 full years of NI contributions to qualify. A minimum of 35 years is required to receive the maximum amount.
If you have gaps in your NI record, you can make voluntary contributions through the government top-up scheme. For more information or to check your NI record, please visit the UK government website.
There are two State Pension systems in place for those who qualify – the basic State Pension and the new State Pension. Your date of birth will determine which method you use.
You will qualify for the older system (basic State Pension) if you are:
- A man born on or before 5 April 1951
- A woman born on or before 5 April 1953
If you are born after these dates, you will qualify for the new State Pension. The UK government website has more detailed information on the basic State Pension and the new State Pension.
